During the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference held in Paris from Nov 7 to 22, the proposal raised by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) to celebrate the 1,800th anniversary of the ancient Chinese mathematician Liu Hui's birth was approved.

It was the first time that China successfully applied for a birthday anniversary celebration event for a scientist at UNESCO, with full support from Azerbaijan and the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Traditional Chinese mathematics is not only one of the most developed basic scientific disciplines of ancient China but also an essential component of global ancient mathematics.

As one of the founders of classical Chinese mathematical theories, Liu Hui has made unprecedented contributions with his commentary on Jiuzhang Suanshu (The Nine Chapters on the Mathematical Art), which had a profound influence on a large number of mathematicians and mathematical works in later generations.

The anniversary celebration is scheduled to be jointly held in China, France, and other countries and regions from 2024 to 2025, and mathematicians from multiple countries and regions around the world will be invited.

The celebration will showcase the achievements made by ancient Chinese mathematicians, and promote exchanges among diverse civilizations around the globe.
