On May 26, 2024, Han Qunli, executive director of the United Nations International Program for Integrated Disaster Risk Research (IRDR), and Lian Fang, scientific director of IRDR, met with Professor Orhan Altan, chairman of the GeoUnions Standing Committee on Disaster Risk Reduction of the International Science Council (ISC-G-DRR), as well as a delegation from the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) at the cluster for international science and technology organizations in Beijing.

Centering around integrated disaster risk research, the meeting delved into detailed plans for the collaborative organization of the 2024 series of thematic sessions.

Previously, the ISC-G-DRR and the IRDR signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation in 2023. The two sides pledged to enhance cooperation in the development of risk science, including providing mutual support for major international conferences held by each side, such as the Gi4DM Conference and the triennial IRDR Scientific Conference.

During the meeting, the IRDR invited experts from ISC-G-DRR and ISPRS to attend the 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum (WSTDF), which is scheduled to be held by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) from October 22 to 24 in Beijing. The ISPRS delegation extended an invitation to IRDR experts to deliver lectures at this year's summer workshop.

Furthermore, the IRDR also expressed its hope that the ISC-G-DRR would participate as an observer in the IRDR Scientific Committee meeting set to be held this summer.

The three parties will further engage in global disaster risk reduction. Through cooperation, they aim to complement each other's expertise in research and risk governance, providing solid support for global disaster risk reduction and promoting safe and sustainable development.

Jointly established by the Beijing Association for Science and Technology (BAST) and the Chaoyang District People's Government of Beijing Municipality, China's first cluster of headquarters for international science and technology organizations was inaugurated under the auspices of the CAST at the East Lake International Center in Chaoyang district on May 31, 2023. Eight international organizations moved in as the first batch.

The cluster is designed to pool sci-tech innovative resources from across the globe and promote international exchanges and cooperation in science and technology.
