The 2024 CAST Summer Camp for Young Science and Technology Volunteers (Shenzhen) started with an opening ceremony in Shenzhen, on July 22. The event gathered 15 young ethnic Chinese sci-tech professionals from 14 countries, marking a significant moment in international scientific collaboration.

The event is a collaborative effort led by the Department of International Affairs of the CAST, the China Centre for International Science and Technology Exchange, the Guangdong Association for Science and Technology, and the Shenzhen Association for Science and Technology. Representatives of these stakeholders were present to address the attendees.

The ceremony began with a screening of a promotional video of Shenzhen, followed by a panoramic view of its iconic landmarks. The participants engaged in an ice-breaking activity centered around the experience of exploring “Hanfu”, the characteristic clothing of the Han ethnic group. The event underscored the city's moniker as the "Silicon Valley of China", showcasing its spirit of innovation and inclusiveness, fostering friendship among the campers.

Over the next seven days, the participants will visit leading enterprises and universities for educational exchanges and to provide volunteer services in various settings, including urban and rural communities, parks, and middle schools. Their itinerary also includes a range of historical and cultural experiences designed to deepen their understanding of the history and modern significance of the city.

This edition of the summer camp, which is the second of its kind in 2024, offers university students, graduate students, and young professionals in STEM fields a unique opportunity to explore China, share its stories, and showcase the charm of its culture.

The event seeks to strengthen friendly exchanges between young Chinese and foreign science-savvy professionals, establishing a bridge for fostering solid ties between the two parties.
