The CAST UN Consultative Committee on Sustainable City, Community and Heritage (CCSC) hosted a side event at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF2024) on July 17, in collaboration with the International Society of City and Regional Planners (ISOCARP) and the Urban Planning Society of China.
The online event, themed "Prioritizing Actions to Advance City Climate Resilience in Bay Areas", drew an audience of approximately 3,000 experts and representatives from various sectors.
Wu Jiang, Rotating President of the CCSC Committee, presided over the event. In attendance were Luo Hui, Director General of the Department of International Affairs, Pietro Elisei, President of ISOCARP, and Thomas Cheung, Vice President of Zone C at the Architects Regional Council Asia (ARCASIA), who delivered opening remarks.
The event featured insightful discussions led by experts such as Pietro Elisei, Ali A. Alraouf, a professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) in Qatar, Annerudha Paul from the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture (KRVIA), Eliana Rosa de Queiroz Barbosa, a professor from the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and M.K. Leung, the Director of Sustainable Design at Ronald Lu & Partners (RLP Asia). The focus was on strategies to enhance the resilience of cities in bay areas against climate change while aligning with the sustainable development goals.
The 2024 United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, which took place at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from July 8 to 17, was themed around “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and Eradicating Poverty in Times of Multiple Crises”.
The CCSC’s side event marked the first successful application by the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST) since it obtained consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2024.
The event served as a platform for global stakeholders to engage in critical discussions and to promote the understanding and implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its goals.
