Co-sponsored by the Science and Technology Review Publishing House, the National Communication Center for Science and Technology (NCCST) affiliated with the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), and Science/AAAS, a panel discussion to shape the future of international science communication empowered by AI technology convened at the NCCST on October 15, 2024.
The event attracted over 60 experts who participated in person and was live-streamed on media platforms including the Voice of CAST (VOC), the video channels of the Science and Technology Review Publishing House and the Research journal, and the official Bilibili account of Science.
The event featured a keynote speech by Brian Lin, a science communicator with more than two decades of experience who oversees the EurekAlert!, a non-profit science news release distribution platform operated by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
Lin’s speech focused on the topic of international science communication in the AI era, covering the development history of EurekAlert!, its efforts in science communication, and its achievements in cooperating with China. His speech sparked positive feedback from the attendees.
Chu Xiaoying, Director of International Collaboration & Partner Publishing at the Science/AAAS, along with Brian Lin, Liu Li, Director of the Academic Service Center at the ZhiPu AI, Liu Bing, Deputy Editor-in-Chief at the Publishing House of the Chinese Medical Association (CMA), and Qiao Kunpeng, Director of Knowledge Management and Solutions at the Zhongtu Kexin, engaged in discussing how AI technology functions in transforming international science communication, improving communication efficiency, and delivering personalized contents to users.
The panel also addressed the risks and challenges brought by AI, including issues of copyright, credibility, and ideology, calling upon science communicators to make continuous efforts to leverage AI technology to improve science communication.
The panel discussion was lively, with each participant sharing their ideas. Afterwards, the participants visited the National Museum for Modern Chinese Scientist located at the 3rd floor of the NCCST.
In 2018, the Science and Technology Review Publishing House affiliated with CAST joined hands with the AAAS to publish Research, the first journal in the Science Partner Journal (SPJ) program.
Building on this collaboration, the Science and Technology Review Publishing House signed a memorandum of cooperation with the AAAS in 2023 to jointly launch a series of academic activities to strengthen people-to-people exchanges among young scholars of the two countries.
The panel discussion is one of these academic activities.
