The Chinese Meteorological Society (CMS) marked its 100th anniversary with a seminar on Nov 23 in Qingdao, East China's Shandong province.
The event gathered experts and scholars from China and abroad to discuss the development of meteorological science and technology, aiming to contribute to meteorological capabilities and social services.
Founded in 1924 in Qingdao, the Chinese Meteorological Society has devoted the past century to advancing meteorological science and its applications. The society has been instrumental in fostering academic exchange, disseminating scientific knowledge, establishing influential journals, and training the next-generation professionals, currently counting 40,000 members.
Wan Gang, President of the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), congratulated the society's centennial milestone in his letter to the event commending its efforts in uniting meteorologists who have significantly advanced the discipline. He also emphasized the importance of the society's continued dedication to excellence in the global scientific community.
Chen Zhenlin, Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration, highlighted the society's pivotal role in underpinning China's economic and social development through meteorological research. He called on the society to continue leveraging its strengths to further the high-quality development of meteorology.
Tan Zhemin, President of the 29th CMS Council, in his keynote address, emphasized the society's commitment to reinforcing science communication, enhancing national scientific literacy, and supporting policymaking and services for the next century.
During the event, the CMS announced its inaugural group of academicians, electing 30 meteorology experts, including Zeng Qingcun.
Additionally, the event saw the release of three books about the history and work of the CMS——the Centenary History of the China Meteorological Society (1924-2024), the Commemorative Collection on a Century of Advances in Atmospheric Research and Application, and the Commemorative Collection for the Centennial of Meteorological Science Popularization.
