The Marintec Innovation Conference 2024, held in Shanghai on December 12-13, brought together global experts and leaders to explore solutions for decarbonizing the maritime industry and advancing the adoption of sustainable, low-carbon technologies.

Themed "Alternative Energy and Fuels Contribute to Low-Carbon Maritime," the event commenced with a virtual address by Arsenio Dominguez, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The event featured three comprehensive sessions. The session titled “Review and Outlook” focused on the green transformation of the maritime industry, decarbonization strategies, wind propulsion, EU maritime fuel regulations, and the evolving energy paradigm in shipping. Experts emphasized that global collaboration is a major driver of innovation in maritime energy and fuel systems.

The session titled “Sailing Efficiency” aimed to advance the integration of green technologies and digitalization in shipping. Experts highlighted the importance of investing in clean technologies and using IoT, big data, AI, and alternative fuels like methanol and LNG to improve fuel efficiency and optimize operations.

The session on Industry-Chain Support” addressed advancements in battery technology, wing propulsion, and low-emission fuels. Experts stressed the need for the maritime sector to take the lead in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They urged the adoption of zero-emission fuels and digital tools to enhance operational efficiency and ensure regulatory compliance.

The conference also featured an exhibition showcasing innovations from leading companies in the maritime and energy sectors, including ABB, Headway Technology Group, and RINA.

The Marintec Innovation Conference is committed to advancing cutting-edge maritime technologies. Since its debut in 2017, the biennial conference has been held every December in Shanghai, driving innovation and progress in the maritime industry.

This year’s conference was hosted by the Shanghai Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers and Informa Markets, and co-organized by the China State Shipbuilding Corporation Limited, the China Association of the National Shipbuilding Industry, and the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.
