The medal was presented by Gennady Krasnikov, president of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In his remarks, Yang highlighted the long-standing foundation of China-Russia cooperation in medical research, noting that the honor would further motivate him to promote deeper collaboration between researchers from both countries.
He expressed hope that joint efforts would continue to address major medical challenges and improve public health in both nations.
Named after Nikolai Ivanovich Pirogov, a pioneering Russian surgeon, the medal was established in 2015. It is awarded to scholars who have achieved landmark breakthroughs in basic medical research, clinical studies, drug development and medical innovation.
